July 17th, London, Ontario – Pets are family, and can bring hope, companionship and unconditional love to their people. Adopting a pet in need of a home can also impact communities, alleviating strain on overcrowded shelters. That’s why Humane Society London & Middlesex (HSLM) will bring adoptable pets to 1275 Highbury Ave N Unit Number 117, London, ON, PetSmart open from 9:00AM-9:00PM Monday-Saturday, and 10:00AM-7:00PM on Sunday for PetSmart Charities of Canada® National Adoption Week, taking place July 21 – 27.
To help alleviate costs associated with preparing pets for adoption, HSLM received a $50,000 grant from PetSmart Charities of Canada. HSLM’s partnership with PetSmart is still in its early stages, but the shelter has already seen a significant reduction in adoption turnaround times at the store—most pets are finding homes within just a day. Since receiving the funds, HSLM has administered 147 vaccinations, 40 spay/neuter surgeries, inserted 45 microchips, and 40 flea/tick/worming treatments. More than 400,000 pets have been adopted across Canada in PetSmart stores with support from PetSmart Charities of Canada.
PetSmart Charities of Canada connects adoption partners such as HSLM with local PetSmart stores to bring adoptable pets into Adoption Centres for meet-and-greets. These include pets of all ages, breeds, temperaments, and energy levels. Staff and volunteers are available to help make ideal matches considering lifestyle and other preferences such as personalities, sizes, etc.
“We are incredibly grateful to have received a grant from PetSmart Charities of Canada,” said Melanie Paterack, Manager of Adoptions and Surrender Services at Humane Society London & Middlesex. “This generous support in combination with our on-site Veterinary Clinic, has allowed us to increase and streamline access to veterinary care for our shelter animals, expand our reach through our offsite adoption partner location, and reduce the length of stay for animals in our care, ensuring that pets are prepared for adoption faster.

Adoption plays a vital role in reducing pet overpopulation and helps connect animals in need with loving families. In fact, most pets placed through our PetSmart adoption location are finding homes within a day—demonstrating both the community’s demand and the importance of meeting people where they are. It’s also a cost-effective choice, as adoption fees include essential veterinary care such as vaccinations, spay/neuter procedures, and microchipping. Each adoption not only gives a pet a second chance but also supports a community member in need. At a time when many individuals in our community are facing financial strain or housing instability, the support from PetSmart Charities of Canada is helping us raise greater awareness of our mission and extend our impact to even more families and pets in need. We’re proud to be part of a movement that has helped over 400,000 pets find homes across Canada, and we look forward to continuing to make a difference—one adoption at a time.”
“Our local shelter and rescue partners are overflowing with animals looking for people to love. Adopting or fostering a pet not only enriches your life but is the best way to support your community and local partners like HSLM with their lifesaving work,” said Heidi Marston, director of pet placement at PetSmart Charities of Canada. “There is nothing like the unconditional love of a pet! Please stop by your neighbourhood PetSmart store and meet your new best friend.”
